The afternoon was grey and rainy. Sophia sat on the living room rug, letting out a long sigh. — “What a boring day, Ted,” she said.

Ted was a fluffy, caramel-colored pup. He was lying down, but when he heard his name, he perked up one ear. — “Sniff, sniff...” — went Ted.

His cold little nose began to twitch. He didn't smell dog food or the rain outside. He smelled... adventure.

Ted ran to the back door and barked: — “Woof! Woof!”

Sophia opened the door. The backyard looked different. Deep in the back, a tiny light was flickering near the old garden hose.

The Golden Door

— “What is that, Ted?” — Sophia asked. The dog wagged his tail like a windshield wiper and took off. Sophia followed, her boots making a pitter-patter sound on the wet grass.

In the trunk of the old tree, a tiny, round golden door appeared. Ted pushed it with his snout. Creaaaaak...

— “Do you promise to protect me, Ted?” He licked her hand. It was a very wet "yes." They stepped inside.

On the other side lay the Forest of Lost Toys. There were cotton candy trees, a ground as soft as a quilt, and a purple sky filled with floating soap bubbles.

A blue bunny hopped by with the sound of a tiny piano: Plink-plonk! Sophia and Ted explored orange juice streams and flowers that giggled when you touched them.

The Key of Joy

Soon, a wall made of building blocks blocked their path. At the top, a giant stuffed Cat meowed: — “Only those with the key of joy may pass!”

Sophia felt sad. — “I don’t have a key, Ted!” But the little dog knew exactly what to do. He started to hop, roll, and chase his own tail.

Sophia burst into laughter. — “Hahaha! You’re so silly, Ted!” Even the giant Cat laughed along: — “Meow-hahaha! How fun!”

With their laughter, the wall turned into a colorful staircase. — “Joy has opened the way!” — said the Cat.

Sophia hugged her best friend: — “You’re my hero, Ted.” They climbed up and found the exit: the slide at the park near their house!

Whoooosh! They slid down, and the magic vanished. They were back in the real world, just in time for a snack.

Sophia noticed a golden sparkle in Ted’s fur. He winked and gave a quiet bark. She understood: with Ted around, life is always colorful.
