In the world of tiny creatures, there was an ancient rule: Ants walk above the ground, and Termites walk inside the wood. They never, ever mixed.

Tina was a leaf-cutter ant. She was strong, bright red, and smelled like fresh leaves. Toby was a termite. He was pale, a bit chubby, and smelled like dark, damp wood.

One day, a summer storm crashed down without warning. BOOM!

Trapped in the Dark

The rain turned the garden into a river of mud. Tina, carrying a piece of a rose leaf larger than herself, slipped. She tumbled into a hole at the root of a fallen old oak tree.

Everything went black. The smell was of moldy earth and old dust. “Help!” Tina cried out, reaching out with her antennae. “Shhh! You’ll wake up the Anteater!” a shaky voice whispered.

Tina turned on her “antennae radar.” In front of her, shivering, was Toby the termite. Normally, Tina would have run away. But the entrance to the hole was blocked by a heavy, wet stone that had slid down in the rain.

“We’re stuck,” Toby whimpered. “We’re going to run out of air.”

Strength and Talent

Tina pushed against the stone. She was the strongest ant in the colony, able to lift 50 times her own weight. Hummph! The stone didn’t even budge. It was jammed tight by a thick wooden root.

“I can’t do it,” Tina said, exhausted. “The root is holding the stone in place.”

Toby crawled closer. He touched the root with his pale little antennae. “Wood?” he asked. “Now, that’s something I know about.”

“But you’re so small and soft,” Tina said. “You don’t have any strength.” “I may not have strength in my arms, but I have talent in my teeth,” Toby smiled.

Toby went to work. Crunch, crunch, crunch. The sound was fast and rhythmic. He didn’t push the root; he ate it. He gnawed exactly at the point where the root was pinning the stone. It tasted bitter, but he kept going.

“Done!” Toby said, wiping his mouth. “The lock is gone.”

Invincible Together

Tina braced herself. Now it was her turn. She planted her six legs into the damp soil, pressed her shoulder against the stone, and pushed. She pushed with everything she had.

Without the root in the way, the stone rolled. Vroooooom. A beam of sunlight pierced the hole, lighting up the dust. Fresh air rushed in.

Tina and Toby crawled out, blinking their eyes at the bright world. They looked at each other—the strong ant and the gnawing termite. Alone, they would have been trapped forever. Together, they were invincible.

“See you later, wood-eater,” Tina said, smiling. “See you later, leaf-carrier,” Toby replied.

They went their separate ways, but every time they passed by the old hollow trunk, they would give the wood a little tap with their antennae—the secret code of a friendship that broke all the rules.
